How Kaduna Reimagined Bitcoin Pizza Day as a Catalyst for Community and Financial Freedom

On May 24th, a quiet library in Kaduna transformed into something more: a place where conversations about the future of money unfolded over shared slices of pizza.

While Bitcoin Pizza Day is often remembered as the moment someone paid 10,000 BTC for two pizzas, in Kaduna, that historic transaction became a launchpad for something far more meaningful. For local organizer Abdul Malik, it was an opportunity to reconnect his community with the core of what Bitcoin stands for.

“Bitcoin Pizza Day is a really important moment. It showed the world how Bitcoin could be used for real transactions. For me, organizing this event was a chance to revisit that and show my community the incredible tech changes happening in our money system,” Abdul shared.

Bitcoin, Reintroduced

Many of the event’s 87 attendees were newcomers—curious about Bitcoin, but unsure of where to start. Rather than overwhelm them with jargon or speculation, Abdul took a different approach.

“I invited an experienced Bitcoin educator to break down the concept by talking about the history of money—how we went from bartering to fiat,” he explained. “It didn’t just help people understand Bitcoin. It helped them understand how value is assigned to any form of money.”

People walked away not just understanding Bitcoin, but recognizing their own power in the system.

More Than a Meetup—A Movement

The day’s agenda spanned economic resilience, savings in volatile markets, and the role of peer-to-peer technology in shaping decentralized futures. Most importantly, it was rooted in the community.

“Bitcoin is a freedom technology,” Abdul emphasized. “It truly embodies what money should be in a democratic setting. That’s why gatherings like this matter—they help us grow together, learn together, and secure the future of this technology.”

Tools That Empower

To make the organizing process smoother, Abdul used Evento, a platform that allows anyone to create digital invitations, coordinate attendance, and accept Bitcoin payments—all in one place.

“Evento made everything simple—from the email blasts to sharing pictures after. The user experience is awesome,” he said “Having Bitcoin payments embedded made it easier for people to see the technology in action.”

Wearing the Mission

As part of the event, the Evento team designed limited-edition Bitcoin Pizza Day merch. Who doesn't love merch? Especially Evento merch.

It's funny how tees and stickers can really unite your community - you feel like you're representing a movement bigger than yourself. Sporting a Bitcoin Pizza Day tee at school, you're letting everyone know what you believe in.

We thought it would be fun to make the design feel like a retro pizza box, and all in Evento red.

For many attendees, taking something home was a quiet act of solidarity, a way to carry the mission forward in everyday life.

The Ripple Effect

Events like this one builds momentum.

“Success, for me, is seeing people grow,” Abdul explained. “After the event, I created a communication channel with attendees where we keep learning and take more action in the Bitcoin space.”

Abdul himself was first inspired to get involved through a local community event. That spark has now grown into a mission: to teach, build, and pass it on.

“Seeing people from my community on global stages—people like Abubakar Nur Khalil—showed me that someone from a third-world country can be part of something greater. Bitcoin is fair. It’s built on opportunity.”

Looking Forward

In a world where agency and access are often unequal, events like these remind us that education is empowerment—and that the future is something we build together.
